My sympathies. And what rob so eloquently said. Doubled.
I was looking for a job when I got let go from my last "traditional" job. That was 15 years ago next month. Fifteen years now I've been on my own (as a copywriter I might add). Wouldn't trade it for ANYTHING. Frequently get job offers. It is fun to say no thanks with a smile!
There is a shit-ton of design work out there. Tons more than copywriting work. Get your book together. Get your site built. Get your name out there, go to Chamber meetings, breakfasts, ad agencies, luncheons, happy hours, hand out cards wherever you go and learn to be a good listener and questioner. The work is there. It can be yours and on your terms. This could be one of the biggest opportunities of your life.
CONGRATS. I know that sounds weird. But go for it. As Macca says:
Somebody's knockin' on the door...somebody's ringin' the bell...
