The old Touch becomes the new Touch with the $20 software upgrade. The range is equivalent to my iBook or my wife's PowerBook. The actual range obviously depends on what's between you and the router. I never sit at Starbucks, so I don't have an answer for you there. I'm not sure if I know what you mean by "Downloading? is this possible from the Net?" If you mean does it access the web via a browser, yes, Safari is built in. If you want to download files, no, there is no place to put them or way to access them (at least I have not figured it out yet if there is). Photos and videos are added via iTunes.
Without the software upgrade, you can receive and send emails via webmail if your provider has that option. With the upgrade, you can send and receive via the Mail app. (works great).
Overall, it's a very cool iPod. On a recent trip out of the country, my wife took hers instead of her PB, she never missed having the PB with her.
Go to an Apple Store if you can to check one out.
I guess refurbs will show up at some point.
