The story's plausible. bfd sees it around here. Kid gets new 'book, decides they a) don't like it or b) wanna go on spring break with their friends, and decides to sell - they'll tell mom and dad it got stolen or make up some other ridiculous story.
The bookstore here was selling 'books recently for $900, so again, it's somewhat plausible that the seller just doesn't want it. (btw, the "sale" was on year old 'books - another $150 gets ya a brand new model, so there aren't too many takers)
You could contact the U of O bookstore and find out what they're selling them for right now. It's gotta be last year's model. Campus bookstores gotta clear out all their old stock before the end of the semester, or they're stuck with some seriously old gear that they won't be able to sell.
