Although I'm not fond of consumer reports, they are your best source for initial information. Like you, I'm in the market for a fridge and I'm going with a bottom freezer model with french doors and stainless steel. Haven't decided on the ice maker yet.
I'm going with a bottom freezer because I tend to grab things out of that far less than I do from the fridge itself. French doors because the space between the sides of my galley kitchen are on the narrow side. That and it'll be easier to store leftover pizza in a pizza box in a fridge whose doors open nice and wide. Stainless steel because it looks beautiful in a transitional style kitchen and because it will be what people in my area want when I sell my apartment soem day.
From Consumers.... Whirlpool is #1 in reliability for all types. The other brands vary, depending on fridge type.
