It does a whole lot.
It stores a master password in the keychain. Periodically, that password has to be re-entered to authorize 1Password. When it's authorized, you can use it as a shortcut to login to secure web pages. Just right-click in one of the login fields to select the contextual menu item in your browser or click on the icon in your toolbar.
You can set it to automatically remember all of your logins or to pop up an alert to ask you what to do when it detects that you're logging into a new site or entering data in a new form.
It can be used to save and restore form information. It can intelligently fill in new forms and choose random secure passwords of some preset strength for you.
It also has a feature for iPhone users where it can save encrypted notes as Safari bookmarks and Palm users can sync encrypted notes to their wallet. I haven't tried the encrypted notes yet.
My understanding is that while it can work in Firefox as a normal plugin, they had to make it an input manager in order for it to work in Safari. Which sucks for many reasons, not the least of which is that they have to release a new version whenever Apple updates Safari or tweaks some security feature or another.
