I had a similar experience a few weeks ago with a guy at one of our other plants out of town. After a couple of glasses of wine he began holding forth on all kinds of conspiracies and whatnot.
I politely disagreed with him, and when the rhetoric reached a fever pitch, suggested that we change the subject and talk about work, after explaining that while I respected his right to have these opinions, I could not agree with them, and would prefer to not hear about it again.
Fortunately he was reasonably polite about it. Especially since he was driving home. We went for a walk so he could sober up, and talked about our kids.
I'm not sure what I would have done if he had gotten insistent.. probably started agreeing with him just so I could get back to the hotel in one piece. It would have made the following two working days very strained.
How do I feel about him now ? I keep a polite distance and keep our relationship professional.
