Most polls close at 8 p.m. local time, but it depends on the state--some close at 6 and some at 9. Voters in line when the polls close get to vote, but officials close off the line at closing time.
Numbers will be coming in all day from exit polling. Returns from the precincts will start coming in about 7 p.m. Eastern time. Returns will continue all evening. The California polls close at 11 p.m. Eastern, closer to midnight if there is a line.
We should have a good picture by midnight Eastern--you'll be snoozing before then, I betcha.
There is no campaigning on election day but the candidates do appear at the polls. There are no rallies until after the polls close.
