Back in the early 1990's Apple changed their packaging to plain brown cardboard as part on an environmental initiative, but that changed back when Jobs returned.
The switch to brown boxes in the '90s had nothing to do with an "environmental initiative" and everything to do with cutting costs.
I'm just repeating what Apple said the reason was, you're entitled to your own opinion. The Quadra 700 sold for $5700, I don't think they were losing a lot of profit on the shipping box.
That's not my opinion - it is a fact as stated by Apple during that time period. It's a shame I don't have my old issues of MacUser around to use as a source for this fact.
Financially, Apple was in a world of hurt back then - or don't you remember how close the company came to perishing prior to Jobs' return? They may have offered the Quadra 700 for $5700, but that doesn't mean they sold many of them.
