No, she is not just a 16 year old, she is a 16 year old money making machine for her family and Disney. She has fame and public perception to deal with. This is not just some kid off the street. For better or worse, she accepts all that comes with this fame and consequences to her actions when she accepts these millions.
Still a 16 year old girl... still silly... still playing with another 16 year old silly girl.
Yes, she is in the public eye.
Yes, she makes more in a year than we will probably in our entire lives.
That doesn't change the fact that she's a 16 year old girl.
Let's say she has done something in that photo that made fun of a stereotyped feature of African Americans, we would be hearing a lot more outage and calls for boycotts.
Yes, we would. And that would not be right either.
Like I said; she should be chastised for her behavior, and hopefully have it reinforced that that behavior is NOT OK... even with a friend (asian friend, or african-american friend, or jewish friend, or whatever else).
Then it's time to get over it already. She's already been held up as a bad example. Good. She should be. It was stupid. 16 year olds are stupid once in a while. Kinda the nature of the beast...
Smack her on the nose with a rolled up newspaper, and move on.
This should not be sparking boycotts, riots, white teenage girl burnings, or causing acne.
Point to her and tell your (collective "your" not, like, you specifically) kids "see that... that was wrong, a bad stereotype, and hurtful... I hope her parents have told her the same thing now".
Does it offend me what she did? No, but I think she is stupid for her to let someone take her picture doing it. Does it offend many other people, quite possibly and they have a right to express their opinion. I don't think it came from a malicious place but it sure stoked the memories in my mind of getting beat up as a kid for these eyes that are on my face.
And I got beat up because I was overweight...
And when people tell fat jokes, I get over it.
If they're 16, I can forgive them. They're 16, the stupid is genetic. If they're older, the stupid is a choice, and I might hold a grudge. Unless the joke is really funny, of course (and yes, I'm kidding...).
