What? We're talking about zeroing-out and writing random data to the drive...eight times! That won't do it?
Physical destruction will do it though, not the drilling though unless you drill enough so that there is no platter left just shavings.
Just because the platter doesn't mean the data is gone, the equipment to get the data off is rarer, but I know two companies in the SFV in SoCal that still have the equipment that we used back in 1980 to get data off the old RDM Units, still in use, still working, faster now due to updated translation software, and much faster computers.
Heat will do it quite well, home BBQ works great on the platter.
