I stopped chasing items that involved rebates as the primary reason for purchase. What I will do is evaluate what is needed and, if all else is equal, I will get the item that is ultimately less expensive. I keep an excel spreadsheet of all my outstanding rebates (how else could you keep up?) and I am down to below $100 outstanding.

About a year ago I had over 30 rebates out totaling over $1100 - then I knew it was time to quit!
