Who cares whether Wagonner jumped or was pushed? His tenure was a colossal failure by any measure, and it's not like other auto executives aren't losing their jobs without government help (see also the presidents of Toyota and Peugeot/Citroen).
The unions have made many concessions and will need to make more. GM's new CEO has a better chance of getting that done.
Left to their own devices to go bankrupt, GM and Chrysler would shed a minimum of 1 million jobs, not including job losses from affected suppliers and subcontractors. Whichever politician lets that happen on his/her watch is going to lose the Rust Belt for their party for generations, just like the Democrats lost the South in the 1960s.
