I bought a 3GS iPhone last week and my wife decided that she wanted to trade my old 2G iPhone for her Sony Ericsson. No sweat...we were going to be near an AT&T store so we took both phones in, hoping to walk out with a working iPhone. No dice. They gave me a new SIM but then said "We can't change the service over because we don't have a copy of iTunes on any store computers". You'll have to do that yourself" WHaaaaaa?!?! I asked why they didn't ave a copy and he told me that it was standard practice...you can't get help with iPhone service issues at B&M AT&T stores. Without the power of monopoly, you can bet companies like this would go out of business fast. So,
I could be wrong here, but I think the issue is with Apple. They don't want uneducated ATT people giving support on their phones.
just a hunch...
