I guess I'm conflating 2 scenes. Do you remember what was happening at the time they met when the hit was called off?

I second Ronin and would add The Train, not so much because they are spy films but are suspenses films filmed with no cgi effects. For an old fashioned cold war tv miniseries i recommend The Company with Chris Odonnell.

You could try the original mini series Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy with Alec Guinness. See it now before the remake comes out.

I perennially recommend the BBC series, The State Within. A very good, highly addictive series about Brit/American geopolitical intrigue. It will leave you wanting more at the end. Great acting, too, and the kind of suspense that the Brits do well.
