[cell phones] AT&T to only offer unlimited Texting or "none"
#11
I'm on the $5, 200 texts plan but only because it's a compromise I was willing to do. I'd be texting a heck of a lot more if I had Unlimited but don't like the idea of paying $20/month to have it. Paying extra for any texting is a lot like paying to use email.

Page Plus just upped my included texts to 3000 from 2000 a month, so I should be covered and have a huge cushion. They upped it a couple of months ago from 1200 to 2000. Screw you, AT&T.

There was some study done a while ago that pointed out the consumer products with the highest profit margin. The highest by far was text messages.

in essence, that means when my plan with AT&T expires in late December and I get my iPhone 5, my bill goes up $5.

Currently, I think I have the $15/1500 plan.

No, they'll probably grandfather the old plan, even if you get a new phone.

But new accounts or those who want to change will have to accept the new terms.

Good luck.

All these alternative texting methods, the TextFree app and similar workarounds ... don't they prevent people from conveniently texting "you," i.e. your phone number? And when they see a text from the number that's not in their contacts, how they gonna know who it's from?

Seems like the reason carriers have everyone by the short hairs is because we don't want to have two "phone numbers," one for voice and one for text. Or am I overstating this? (So many lines of text in this post, can they all be questions? I think so?)

I just posted some info on emailing to text messages here:
http://forums.macresource.com/read.php?1,1208746

At least with a direct email I sent to my AT&T number (xxxxxxxxxx@txt.att.net) it was no problem to respond. When I received the text message on my phone it did not show my email address, but did show my name. Responding to it from the phone sent me an email response which quoted the original message.

Important to note that the online services which can send to text message don't work with mobile phone numbers which have been ported from another carrier or a land line unless you know the carrier. Not sure about Google Voice as I don't have that.

Good luck.
