I doubt it. I have no problem with it myself. It is also none of my business.

However, I am sure there are plenty of people who wouldn't do it and I bet a lot of them* would be happy to offer self-righteous proclamations that he is a terrible parent and is what is wrong with the country.

that damn data plan is the only thing keeping me from getting an iphone

Yeah, me too wolf. If they gave the same option as on the iPad, I would get one. $15 or $25 for 30 days as you need it.

He's had a phone since June. It was an old one that we had lying around. The main reason for getting him a phone was he was going off to summer camp (which didn't have any payphones) and he had other activities during the summer. Having a phone made it easier for us to arrange pickups, etc. Now that he has after school activities and he's also heavily involved in Scouts, the convenience for us is even greater.

I love for my kids to have phones. In fact, I'm the one reminding them to charge them and take them. It is comforting when they walk to and from school, when they take the train downtown, when they are going to friends' houses, etc. I don't see a problem with them having the phone at all. I've considered giving one to my 9YO for the same reason.

We got phones for the kids when they started commuting distances to school and/or being away from home a lot.

When I was a kid, I carried an emergency dime for a pay phone if there was a problem. I probably used it once every few months.

There are NO more pay phones.

And, I'll confess to having called one of the kids to bring me something upstairs when my knees hurt too much to go downstairs and get it myself.

what PeterB is saying - if I can assume - is related to the "smartphone" aspect of the iPhone. there's lots of time-wasting possibilities. kids do lots of interesting things with phones these days. mostly, they text about other kids and teachers. sometimes they send photos.

Have you ever seen a teenager/20-something text on a dumbphone? I think they can turn out more WPM than I can with a keyboard!

Ditto. Pay phones are history. Coordinating pick ups can be complicated. That said, my son doesn't have a data plan, has to learn to live with 1500 texts a month, and I use AT&T smart limits so he can't text during school hours. He's 18 and graduates next year.

Ordered a new screen with home button and a replacement lcd as the original was having a few issues. $30 later, I've got a 3G that works perfectly.

You got ALL of that for $30? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
Ran across this trying to find a replacement digitizer/screen for our broken Palm Pixi:

iPhone digitizers/screens:
http://www.directfix.com/category/DIG.html

Looks like their price is $40 for digitizer/screen, home button and frame, so they may not be the cheapest source.

They offer a 7% discount on your first order with the discount code "youtube7".

Sadly, they don't currently stock Pixi digitizers. They do offer take apart videos.

Good luck.
