Depends on what you want and where you are. Good suggestions above. I'd add:

Puerto Rico

San Diego

Friend owns a hotel in Banos de Sante Agua, Ecuador.
You can hike up a volcano, have him or his wife take you on a custom bike tour, ride a bus for an hour to the rain forest. You'd fly in to Quito. PM me if you want specifics.

Edit-- oh yeah-- several "equator" fun parks in Quito where you can watch water drain in both directions, balance an egg on a nail, etc...
And... oh yeah.. once you get there your money goes really far due to goofy/dysfunctional exchange rate (or whatever you'd call it, as they use US Dollars.)

Tucson AZ. Or many parts of Arizona, the Grand Canyon and Petrified Forest are in the north, Sedona is mid north. Further south around Tucson there is the Sonora Desert museum, slightly southeast is Tombstone.

:edit:

Any of the National Parks. California has the Redwoods, Yosemite and more.

I just got back from Aruba. Very kid-friendly with plenty of activities for kids and adults there. It's a pretty small island that's got very gentle waters on the southern side while more energetic waves on the north. Plenty of Wendys/ Dunkin Donuts/ Starbucks there if the kids prefer that. They even have a (shudder) Fridays.

Yuck! Remind me to cross Aruba off my list. They've really gone downhill since I was last there.
