Diesel Honda Civic Tourer Hits 83.52 MPG
#11
The 1992 Honda Civic VX was rated for 49 MPG, but it weighed about 900 lbs less then the current one. Lots of people said they got over 50 MPG and one hyper-miler got 70 MPG averaging 3 fill ups.

Looking at the US lineup of Honda, you wouldn't know they made diesel engines. I wonder if they will start selling them here when the new fleet mileage rules get closer to the implementation date.

It took two drivers 25 days to go 8387 miles.
Please don't tell me they were going 14mph to get 83.52mpg. LOL

where it's cheaper than gasoline too.

That was true, here, once.

Except for some spikes in gas prices, any time I care to look diesel is more expensive. Maybe it's cheaper than gas elsewhere in the states.

Still, it's offset when the vehicle gets better/great mileage.

And if taken care of, the engine can last 2-3 times as long as a gasser. HOWEVER, the rest of the vehicle needs to be built well for that to matter.

How many '80 Olds diesels are still running, vs '80 Mercedes diesels, for example.

Racer X - There are probably very few of the olds '80's Diesels still running.. They made a 'diesel' out of a gas engine. They blew up quite easily and were eventually "AFA"-ed. I have a co-worker who had one of them.

'80's Mercedes Diesels ? bulletproof.

Lean-burn engine?

Can't sell those here anymore either, they run afoul of the same strict NOx emissions limits that doom most diesel engines.

That was his point.

Yes, GM's venture into diesel power for the consumer didn't go very well.

A co-worker had an 80's Cadillac Barritz (?) with a 350 diesel and it did not fare well at all. And they were very dirty back then. He was a right lane kind of guy, and when somebody tailgated, he'd hammer the gas pedal and with a cloud of soot and a hearty Ha Ha! Diesel! the tailgater was away.

He tried to sell the car when his dad passed, but nobody wanted it. So he traded it in on a Honda Civic, and once he got over the dealer's drubbing, he was very happy with the Civic.

HOWEVER.............. You could use the block, some 403 lightweight heads, crank and rods from a 425, and some machining, and have a bulletproof gasser that could handle about 14 to one compression and spin VERY fast.

With modern lubrication and good fuel, diesels are a VERY good choice for a long term highway or long commute solution.

I mean, jeez, my buddy just got 34 mpg on his 2012 Mercedes diesel on a long haul trip doing 75 with the A/C going. Didn't even slow down in the mountains. And it is one heavy car, full of 2 heavy people, and a trunk full of boxed up magazines.

They need a tiny diesel in a smart car kinda thing. Or a diesel Fiat 500.
