Just saw this thread. So here is an update
Last Thursday dad had a 5cm Glioblastoma removed from his brain. The surgery went as expected and he is recovering quickly. Dad will be leaving the Neural ICU today and is being transferred to a nearby hospital for acute physical therapy. At 76 yrs old we had to get approval from both the PT and his insurance company for acute therapy, which is short term, 6 hrs per day PT as compared to a more typical 2-3 week workload. The actor application is typically used on younger patients expecting a 100% physical recovery. Once they spoke to his supervisor and were told that 4 days prior to surgery, he was stocking 50 lb bags of concrete at Home Depot and walks 5 miles a day, he was approved for acute rehabilitation. Today he goes to the other hospital that has the acute rehabilitation program as his neuro surgical hospital does not offer that. We are hoping that he can make a birthday party for his daughter in law Sunday. He also wants to play in a golf tournament Sept 23rd that he has signed up for. Once he is back on his feet, treatment for the tumor will begin with cyber knife radiation, Chemotherapy and a newer treatment called NovoTT, all in order to attack the tumor because there is a 100% chance it will regrow at come point. Treatment is designed to keep it at bay for as long as possible. We are also applying for dad to take part in a study testing a viral attack on Glioblastoma tumors. This viral attack looks promising, with a little over 100 patients having had the treatment so far. Jon |
