Pretty much always salt, but I do use sand on occasion. Our county road plows use a mixture of sand and salt.

Salt damages concrete, so I avoid using it on our walks. I use it only when needed on the driveway. If I get my drive cleared by early morning, the sun does the rest.

most municipalities ceased using sand in winter because it was clogging the drains. But salt has many downsides as people are noting.

True tree-huggers save and use the brining liquid from Thanksgiving to spray their sidewalk and driveway. SHAME on you all.

Both? Not sure why it's one or the other. Around here we just wait a day.

Neither. Kitty litter (clean, of course). I think it gives much better traction than sand. Used to use salt until I spent over 8 grand on a driveway and the installer said to never use salt, even after it cured for a couple years.

I solved the problem by moving to California ...

One problem with salt is that once it melts the ice, if it's still cold enough, the water will just freeze again. At least sand might buy you some more time and get you where you need to go.

FLAMETHROWER !!!!!!
Seriously I just try to get to it before it gets too thick. Or salt lightly to taste then remove the rotten stuff.

Sand is not that great for ice. Try kitty if you do not want the coercive effects of salt. They sell it in bulk at your local warehouse club.
