how the heck do you see out the rear window?

In the US side cameras aren't legal. Mirrors are REQUIRED to be included with the vehicle at the time of sale. The end user can remove one, the other, or both depending on state laws.

or both depending on state laws.

Hm.

It's curious that any state would allow both side mirrors to be removed.

A CA registered vehicle must have two mirrors, one being a left side mirror.

The other can be either a rearview (inside) mirror.

If view out the rear window is obstructed, then a right side mirror is also required.

There are specific exceptions where two side mirrors are required.

There is an additional exception or two, but for most of the motoring public, the above applies.

So, an CA owner could take delivery of a car, which would have three mirrors, and then remove the right side mirror for whatever reason.

Only when the view to the rear was obscured would he be in violation.

But no side mirrors?

That would be unique, here.

That's likely true if side cameras replaced any required mirrors.

That would be true in CA.

Maybe I saw an aftermarket kit that supplemented side mirrors.

As long as the internal and right side mirrors had an unobstructed view, a camera might legally replace the mirror.

It's a fine point, but I'm guessing side cameras aren't illegal, but it's having less than the legally required number of mirrors, at least in CA.

this Polestar will be built in both gina and SC.
The vid makes it looks attractive, but we'll see what the final looks like coming off the SC line.

My son laughs at me because I ignore the backup camera and turn around to look. Old habits and honestly, I feel more secure doing it that way.

Weren't passenger door side mirrors optional until sometime in the 1970s? Point being: we have it better! Still. My ideal:

I remember when the right side mirror was optional, If both side mirrors were optional, it had to be before the 50s.

I’m sure there was a point in time, that mirrors were optional, but I doubt any of us could remember that.

Yep, nobody is gonna sneak up on you from behind in a Volvo 240, or in a 740 for that matter. I was hoping the "high-pockets beltline with gunslits for windows" look in cars and SUVs would have run it's course by now, but apparently not.
