Battery powered riding mower, any ready for prime time?
#11
the o'cala farm has 2 acres that the half tons can't possibly devour.
Spousal unit (the equestrian) bought a gas powered deck mower after spending much time looking at ev deck mowers.
Simply no comparison.
The neighbors all had/have done the same.

I imagine we will cut the grasses to lower the fire hazard.

The real estate person did mention letting a goat person board the goats on the property between brush clearing jobs, thanks for the reminder.

Today, we might rip out the old carpet and take it to the dump. Hoping we haven’t bit off too much overall…

No offense to all those convinced that battery powered crap is the wave of the future, but ...

I have 1/2 acre and bought a battery powered mowed advertised to cut up to 1/2 acre on one charge. It did once or twice, but as the battery aged it cut less and less on a charge, and in really hot weather it cut even far less! Within two years I had to replace the battery which costs as much as the mower and battery did when I first bought it. Now days most of the battery mowers I've looked at no longer come with batteries or chargers - that's an extra cost item.

The old gas mower I had replaced ran for almost 20 years only requiring an occasional tune up. new blade and new wheels. Based on this I'm inclined to say that the cost of going electric is about 10 times that of a good old gas powered unit.

And the "save the planet from global climate change" is an extremely weak argument when full life cycle costs are factored in or when you consider that shifting production of "environmentally insensitive" items from on-shore to off-shore can't save the planet unless off-shore is on Mars.

I have 1.6 acres and got a gas-powered Cub Cadet. Wanted to go electric but couldn’t justify the cost difference. I’m hoping that when it’s time to replace my current one, battery powered ones will be more reasonably priced.

You had a bad experience, a very large bad experience. Its hard to tell how much of it was "electric isn't ready" vs "bad luck"

BUT

Electric is just more convenient when its up for the job.

Raise up the cover and look the info plate. Cub Cadet, Craftsman, Troy-Bilt, and Yard Man are all built by MTD. Basically the same mower with different cosmetics and sold at different prices.

For the size lot you are talking about, you need to look at commercial gear like Hustler, Graveley, Scag, or Bad Boy. Be aware you are looking at $12k+
