What type of detector is closest to the kitchen? I have seen recommendations that ones close to a cooking area should not be of the ionization detector type. Instead a photoelectric based detector was recommended.

The closest one is 10 feet away, in a hallway that connects bedrooms and is positioned at the top of stairs to the basement. Another 12-18 feet and you hit three bedrooms that each have their own detectors which temd to go off at the same time

10 ft is on the "too close" side. As for detectors going off at the same time, a lot of models are made to go off if another compatible detector in the house has gone off.

Then the kitchen was built too close to the bedrooms.
