Idea for followup poll - how much are you spending to do your taxes with answers like:
$price of tax software
$flat price of tax service
$price of my time
$cpa custom value range

As others have stated, I run the numbers both ways and go with what the tax software indicates results in the lowest taxes. Since 2018, most years the standard deduction is the correct way.

Up until last year itemize - last year the standard deduction was more beneficial. I always run the numbers for itemization and then compare.

Ever since my wife went back to work out of the house, not self employed, some years we could not get enough deductions to itemize. I think our last itemize year was when we replaced the septic.

Without a home mortgage deduction and being retired, it's super simple: standard deduction.

Hell, even the home mortgage deduction may not make it close enough to justify. I know ours won't. Not really complaining, though. It sure makes it easier to file.

I did my own taxes, on paper, until my parents passed away. Then it became way too complicated to do manually on paper. It was by far easier to let a professional familiar with the software to do it for me. And it is worth every penny.
