I still am not sure why anyone would need a really high megapixel camera for webcam purposes. If you're doing detailed instructional videos, yes. But for those doing conference calls, etc it's over kill. You can't use the high bandwidth when on VPN and it causes issues for some users. Maybe I'm missing the need.

Perhaps it's not intended for people just doing conference calls, but rather people who actually make money via web cams...
So, porn.

Just depends upon how you want to present yourself. I definitely looks nicer to have a high res camera.

Matt,

I doubt someone using the Powershot as a webcam is going to set it to a resolution higher than 2K or 4K. Both of those resolutions always produce amazing video for webcam. Heck, neither are even the most common resolutions in use right now. Many of the most common webcams are still using just 1080p.

'course, a high res webcam like a quality 4K model is still going to run you well over $100.00. So, you can get at least two years worth of using the Canon as a webcam and still not have recouped the cost of a dedicated high res webcam. There is something to be said for that.

I think of it like the Toshiba TIVO DVD recorder I used prior to switching to a cable provider's DVR system. The Toshiba included TIVO basic free of charge. It made the DVR function like a VCR. If I wanted the full-scale TIVO features, I had to spend the bucks for a subscription to the appropriate level of TIVO service. I knew that prior to purchasing the DVR.

I'm willing to bet that Canon notates that you'll need to subscribe to the Pro version of the app to get all of the extra features either in the advertisement and/or in a note at the bottom of the product page. If that's the case - and I bet I'm correct about it - it's on the buyer to be aware of the difference between the basic features that are included free of charge and the pro features provided on a subscription only basis prior to purchasing the camera.
