Electrostatic headphones have always needed an amp, and some had to be connected to the speaker terminals.
But the headphone amp has traditionally been a weak link in most gear and even in some of the beast stuff.
This company ( http://www.headphone.com/products/headphone-amps/ ) has been selling headphone amps for years, extolling the virtues of (their) external amps.
A good amp connected to the dock connector *could* easily make a significant improvement in even modest equipment.
Or not. Your mileage and all.
