the only reason that corn is planted is for animal feed.

if people stopped eating animal meat, the corn wouldn't be planted.

I put it the way I did for the sake of brevity. The corn reference was simply meant as a placeholder name for all kinds of plants we feed to cattle. It's not like a farmer in Iowa with 300 acres of land isn't going to grow anything on the land if she can't grow a variety of corn best suited for cattle feed.

An ecological rule of thumb is that only 10% of the energy that went into growing the food stock is available to the consumer.

In simplistic terms, 100 pounds of corn will give you 10 pounds of cow which will give you 1 pound of hamburger. If you consume the corn directly, it's a 10-fold advantage.

Or puts ethanol in thier car.
