Have you ever wondered where ADHD in children comes from?
#11
None of the above comments address the real problem of ADD and ADHD. The fact that it wasn't identified or diagnosed 15, 25 or 50 years ago doesn't mean it wasn't real. It did exist back then but just went undiagnosed and untreated.

What we are seeing today is an overreaction to an overreaction. Far more parents than should have evaded the trials and tribulations of parenting by finding accommodating doctors who would agree to drug their kids and American medicine being what it is today they had no problem providing the requisite quacks to sign off on the 'scripts.

That doesn't address those kids who really suffer from ADD and ADHD. Those who for decades were shunted aside and never had a chance at treatment because treatment didn't exist. Throw the baby out with the bathwater if you are so inclined but remember this - if you allow your anger at irresponsible parents and doctors to decide this issue for you, you'll also be throwing out a bunch of deserving and afflicted children who are actually being helped by psychotropic medications and an appropriate learning/home/medical environment.

I always thought it was the unwillingness of some parents to explain the concepts of "No" and "Personal Responsibility" to their children. A diagnosis of ADD/ADHD is overused as a crutch these days instead of a good swift kick in the rear - which is a serious disservice to the kids who legitimately have ADHD.

Okay mick e was just using the ADHD as a vehicle to talk about ROCKET FUEL in baby formula, but that's okay. Some of his little headline tricks aren't as clever as he thinks they are

Not really.

Ritalin was patented in 1954 and used in the 60s as a treatment for ADD/ADHD:

I agree completely

The kids I saw most often who'd been diagnosed ADHD - and medicated - most likely didn't suffer from it in the first place. I saw too many come out of totally chaotic homes, and their reaction to that was acting out in school. Sadly there are too many teachers very willing to push a parent into getting their kids medicated, and, of course, the parents were happy to oblige, because their primary goal was to stay under the radar of teachers and school staff. I often wondered why teachers never caught on to the fact something else was going on, considering medicating a child who is not really ADHD doesn't do anything for their behavior problems. I do understand that ADD and ADHD are real issues, but the number of kids diagnosed is undoubtedly inflated dramatically beyond its real rate of occurrence.

I will amen this.

My grandson was kept doped up on retalin during his younger years because of poor parenting (IMHO) When he came to visit us we didn't give it to him and he did just fine. A normal boisterous boy as should be. We fed him on time and gave him outlets for his exuberance.

We are now paying the price as he stays in trouble and we're really having trouble getting him from boyhood to manhood. His dad has written him off as bad and we the grandparents are he has left.
