The USS Oriskany in Pensacola and USS Spiegel Grove in Key Largo have both been very successful tourist attractions for Scuba divers. The SS United States would be a much better dive than either.

And turning Oriskany into that reef cost a hell of a lot more money than $5 Million!
Let's see... SPEND $20 million to sink the SS United States, or sell it for $5 Million to someone who wants to return one of the greatest liners in history to service...
Only a retard, or a Government employee, would choose the former.
Not that I have a strong opinion on that...

Ombiglio, I would definitely agree the Big U would be better off reefed than scrapped. My eye rolling was mainly at the contempt in testcase's post. The SSUS represents the pinnacle of American shipbuilding and is most certainly historic. The problem, of course, is finding a way for her to earn her keep in the future. I'm well aware that that might not be possible but I'm happy for now that the seller stipulates non-demolition.
