Everything needs drivers.
At a certain point, the drivers for Zips were loaded by default in the OS.
It could be that after Zips fell out of favor, OS X stopped shipping with drivers. I could be wrong about that, though.

I'm installing OS 9 on the machine now on a spare drive. I'll report back when/if I discover something. Thanks, all, for your suggestions/input so far.

"Everything needs drivers."

What a stupid statement.

OK, Genius, please explain to the class how (any) hardware interacts with (any) OS without DEVICE DRIVERS OF ANY KIND. Be as specific as you can.

Just because the end user doesn't have to install anything, doesn't mean there are no drivers needed.

Idiot.

All of my Zip Disks are formatted as Mac OS Extended disks using Apple Drive Setup.

As such they function just like any other re-writable drive (ie Hard drive) as far as the Mac is concerned.

These disks still fail to mount or bee seen under OS X on a machine that works just fine with them under OS 9.

While childishly attempting to chastise me for typing "As I recall, it shouldn't need drivers" instead of "As I recall, it shouldn't need ADDITIONAL drivers" you made the moronic statement "Everything needs drivers.". A tree doesn't need drivers. Neither does a mousepad, Need any more examples, idiot?

The drivers are compiled into the kernel, tough guy.
This is getting corny.

I have a Wallstreet dual-boot OS 10.2.8 and 9.2.2 that reads ZIP cartridges just fine from both an internal ZIP drive and an external SCSI ZIP drive. In fact it works for both ZIP 100 and ZIP 250 drives, in both OS 10 and 9.

My Pismo also reads ZIP carts on its internal ZIP drive under OS 10.4.11.

Both OS 10 installations are the end result of progressive upgrades, so I can't be sure which version of OS 10 put in whatever ZIP drivers are there. The OS 9 installation has a file named Iomega Driver in the Extensions folder.

IIRC this my Mac used to work just fine with the Zip drive under 10.3.9 but now does not with 10.4.11
