Robert, I don't thing that's what AA is doing.
He's just amplifying on a theme, and as I'm wondering which way to go in that respect, I appreciate seeing both sides of that particular HT coin.
But, a duel would be sorta cool!

RAM,
In another thread, definitely but please not in this one. What I did with the mini I borrowed from my office was just for giggles. I had the opportunity and took advantage of it and decided to post about the experience. If anything, I'd like to see this thread continue to discuss what people have done with their "Home Theater" minis (or computers). That would be more along the lines of my original post and I'd like to see thread stay in that direction.

Just trying to be helpful, Robert. I think you could get an even better solution and save some money to boot!

Regarding AppleTV vs. Mac mini - there are pluses and minus. The AppleTV, with it's 1 GHz PentiumM and 256 MB of RAM has difficulty playing most types of HD video, with the exception of the HD Video content offered thru iTunes (H.264, 1280 x 720, 5 Mbps maximum). The 1.83 GHz Core2Duo in the $349 Mac mini that Microcenter was selling last week is a lot more computer than the AppleTV. Considering it ships with Front Row and the Apple remote - it's a very good media center computer.

Yep. It's a DUEL!
Now that I know there is just a Pentium Mobile in there, I'd only get an AppleTV if that chip was not soldered. Stinkin' Celeron with 2x cache!

Is the Mac mini running 10.5.7? I haven't seen any success with 10.5.7 and this setup. Granted, my own experience is limited to 5 Macs. However, there are reports of this problem everywhere on the interweb.

I've read of problem reports with 10.5.7 and Intel Macs using a HDMI cable. I've kept mine at 10.5.6 for just this reason.

I just wish Apple, or someone else would come up with a way to play 1080p HD Bluray with a Mac. Also, allow iTunes and Front Row to play a wider array of video content. I still run into plenty MPeg video that I need VLC to play.
Either a way to play Bluray or a way to rip Bluray to Quicktime.
I would have 3 mini's set up as media machines if this were elegantly possible
