"neo" as applied to "Conservative" is a liberal apellation. Cain's denial of there being some sort of separate 'movement' is very correct. He recognized what you did not... the question was an attempt to drive a wedge between himself and this supposed 'group'. In short, it was a very leading question.
However.. as in any philisophical or political group, there are always sub-groups that may name themselves or be named by others. For example, there are a number of Vegans who are also active Democrats. Is there a Veg-Liberal movement ?

This is the 2012 version of what is the Bush Doctrine. Get a new playbook, David.

"In contemporary usage, the term "neoconservative" was used in 1973 to criticize American liberals and social democrats who had criticized the ambitions and outcomes of the Great Society's welfare programs."
In other words, RINO. Now it's being used to encompass the far right wing.

It's true that the neoconservative movement came from disaffected liberals in the 1970s, but they called themselves paleoliberals, not neoconservatives, and a number of those policies have now been seized upon by the extreme right wing. This is all irrelevant to the question...neoconservatism has been a well established movement since the cold war, and for Herman Cain to not be familiar with it only goes to underscore his complete ignorance of US foreign policies of the past few decades.

davester, fair enough. I tend to think his response was related to his desire to avoid separating his supporters. Divide and conquer is a classic approach in all warfare.
The funny thing is that 'conservative' means so many different things to different people. Perhaps the addition of a separate adjective.. "Fiscal Conservative" "Social Conservative" "Deficit Convervative" "Christian Fundamentalist Conservative" "Islamic Fundamentalist Conservative". etc...

Perhaps in a politic-oriented sunday morning talk show, the context should have been recognized. But then again, I'm sure all tea partyites consider any question from the media to be an act of warfare.
