One of the amazing things about Breaking Bad is how completely effortless it is to suspend reality while watching

A necessary, but not sufficient goal. You need to do that (not an entirely easy task) and then rise above with your story and acting to push it to the realm of art.

Really? To please who? Who's concept of television art? What tv art exceeds it?

To capture an audience, the suspension of disbelief is required. Just because you achieve that, does not mean you please the audience or make a mark on their consciousness. To make that mark, in another words to have people discussing the meanings of your work, etc., as you see with True Detective, you must rise above the a simple suspension of disbelief and create something more. That is when I consider a production to meet art.

Breaking Bad fails to show the impact of the meth addiction on people's real lives. It's all exciting Heisenberg stuff, which to me is both addictive and phony.

Really? "Peek-A-Boo" from the second season leaps to mind as a particularly harrowing illustration of that impact.

You sound very confident, that's for sure.

August has been reverse-sharpening his wits arguing with nut jobs in the 'friendly' forum-- not suprising he immediately and thoroughly removed my statement from its intended context.

As I said, you would be surprised who has Emmys. I worked in Film and TV for a decade.

I wasn't trying to denigrate your post, Black. I found it quite astute. I was simply trying to expand on it.

(The forum filter lets you say "denigrate?")

I tried to watch Breaking Bad but it left me horribly depressed. I had to stop watching it. Maybe because there never seems to be any hope for the future.

Nonsense—I always felt Walter would survive and prosper.
