Practical, I do not think that means what you think it means. Big Grin

LOL, yea.
LOL, yes, it’s a relative term. The tech is low end and the engines/maintenance availability is much better for the T-38….millionaire toys.

My dad, a long time Avionics engineer at Douglas (later Boeing), used to work with a fellow whose license plate was F4S4EVR.

I almost got a ride in the back seat of a (piloted) QF-4 about 22 years ago. Still wish that had come off. I love that jet.

T-38 for me

What Might Have Been: F-20 Tigershark. The best fighter never bought?

When test pilot Russ Scott took off from Edwards Air Force Base, Calif. on Aug. 30, 1982, he was making the maiden flight of a sleek and beautiful fighter, the Northrop F-20A Tigershark.

With a General Electric F404-GE-100 turbofan engine rated at 17,000 pounds of thrust, the F-20A was 40 percent more powerful than the twin-engined F-5E Tiger II that preceded it. Northrop said the F-20A would have a low price tag, operate from short runways, and outfight the Soviet Union’s best.

Lots of great stuff out there on the F20, tons of good YT vids.

My fathers second wife worked at Northrop in Torrance during those years, there was a ton of F20 stuff all over their house.

The F20 had the F16 Engine in it. The F18 has two less powerful engines. The SuperHornet is something else entirely!

I myself am Partial to the F104, myself.

But I'd be happy with an F4U Corsair!

I saw an F-4 go down in the Yellow Sea after an exercise at Kunsan Air Base around 1981-1982. Both pilots bailed out, and were picked up by a Korean fishing boat.

Both engines flamed out. A compressor stall perhaps? It seems odd that both engines would do the same thing. It seems like (well to me anyway) that both engines would be independent of each other. Maybe not.

Anyhow, I'd want a jet that was a bit more reliable. Like a "big mouth" F-16 with the General Electric engine.
