Wait a minute!
Take the big iMac off its stand, hang it on the wall, add a tuner, and it's already a TV.
...A 24-incher with no room for the inputs people expect in a premium television.
Maybe for a kids room. Not for the living room.
I meant it's essentially a TV. Then you make bigger screens available, and add all the inputs (you wouldn't need many, as an iMac already plays DVDs and streaming video).

Cringely had this same rumor about 2 years ago, IIRC.
Unlike quad-band GSM there is no worldwide standard for digital TV
Here in the U.S. you need 2 different tuners to receive digital over-the-air and digital cable TV.

They failed with the Apple TV.
BGnR? Is that you? Pssst...Apple TV is a current, ongoing product.
their low quality HD (only 720p) content.
Apple rents downloadable movies: Did you ever notice how many people even here are still using dial-up? Did you ever notice that ABC, PBS, Fox, and MyTV broadcast in "low quality" 720p? You should let them know...
DIRECTV says they are broadcasting content in 1080p
Good one, FH...DirectTV can't even manage 720p without severe blockiness and motion artifacts.

OMG, however will poor Apple get access to those standards, not to mention the $2 parts?

I have worked with clients in the past who would buy ANYTHING Apple had on the high-end. There are people with deep pockets who will pay for anything.
That doesn't mean that Apple is going for that market. They tried that with the Cube that didn't go anywhere until they lowered the price, and then it didn't go much farther.
And because the market IS so cutthroat, that would be another reason not to market to just the Apple fanboys. Despite what some want to think, fanboys are a much smaller niche than Apple users. It's not all about branding.
Well-written? Not really.
Actually, it is well written for what it *is*-- a lot of wishful thinking and day dreaming with valid points made. The author made no claims that "Apple *is* making a TV and here's why...".
He says "I have no confirmation of this from inside of Apple, but I must say that this makes huge sense to me.
Here is my logic:".
What facts does anybody have to show his logic is incorrect, misleading, or lies, distortions, and half-truths, and that it can't possibly make sense?
A lot of people thought Apple would never enter the cell phone biz either, but look what happened.
EXACTLY!
A lot of analysts and forum experts said "NO WAY" about the iPhone. Apple was doomed. It was outsider their sphere of expertise. The only expertise they had at that time was integrating such a device to a computer, oh, and creating an OS for it. And how do *we* know that this is "all of a sudden"?
While none of this means that Apple is going to bring out an actual TV, it certainly doesn't show they could do so and be successful. And making a "tablet computer for $500" is completely irrelevant to making a TV.
I meant it's essentially a TV.
And you are correct. It would be a small effort to tuck in a tuner on a bigger screen. There is no doubt in my mind that Apple couldn't do for TVs what it did for cellphones. I just don't think it will happen yet, and possibly not at all.
But nobody here has given a good reason why Apple couldn't be successful, merely a lot of wishful thinking and daydreaming, me thinks.
My only logic here is that if Apple were making a TV (which to me means a display bigger than 30", somebody would have probably leaked the news that Apple ordered 40" panels (since *I* want a TV at least that big) by now.
I certainly would give an Apple television a close look.

Other companies are starting to incorporate computer/AppleTV-like features (Ethernet, WiFi, iPod docks, Netflix, etc) into their TVs.
It's not far-fetched at all to think that Apple wouldn't approach the market from the other direction.

Er, I think you mean "It's not far-fetched at all to think that Apple would approach the market from the other direction."
Eliminating the double negative.

$2 parts matter when you're talking about a commodity-priced product with no opportunity to make up low margins via a pricey subscription-based model (as they did with the iPhone)
Exactly how would Apple distinguish themselves to command enough of a price premium to make entry into the flat-panel segment worth their while?

Microsoft updates Xbox 360 to stream 1080p. Microsoft has sold about 12 million units in the US. This is a huge installed base.
If Netflix adds the option, I think the Apple TV will officially dead and iTunes video has some massive competition.
