I'm taking it that you need a mini-VGA adapter? Not the same adapter as used by the MacBook or MBP, right?
Nope. Not the same. They'd use Mini-DVI or Mini DisplayPort.

check under the keyboard for a serial number, and look it up on Apple's site.

Over time, the heat/cool cycles of the computer warming up during use and cooling off when not in use would crack the solder.
I'd bet that physical abuse was a bigger cause of failure of a cold solder joint. Many, many MANY people seem to want to carry a 'Book (or laptop) by the left front corner of the 'Book. This stresses/stressed the case causing it to flex and the upper portion to rub the chip, straining the solder joints. Eventually they fail and calamity ensues. Other video failures have been caused by a bad ribbon cable from the logic board to the display. My G3 is still running strong, though on its second battery and AC adapter. It's lonely at the top.

I very rarely carried that iBook anywhere except closed, to and from the case. That is one huge advantage of the unibody Macs. The ones I have looked at are far stiffer than anything I can remember over the last 8 years or so. I hope it makes them a lot more dependable over time. - Winston |
