also could have been an accident, e.g. car smash
has a friend in college whose younger brother broke into his residence to steal his car keys for a joyride.
his brother wasn't under the influence, but while screwing around ran a stoplight and permanently crippled the young mother whose car he hit.
now, she didn't die (barely), but my friend was left with the dilemma: tell the cops brother stole the car or keep quiet and be civilly liable for his conduct?

Not necessarily. Acting in defense of oneself or another innocent.
Been there, done that.
No regrets.
If the same circumstances presented again, my actions would be the same.

Fortunately for most people, they never come face to face with true evil. Should they ever, their very life depends on them being able to do the unthinkable and, do it quickly.

yes, what a question.
have you ever considered that there may be some veteran among us, who had to defend their country?
or someone jaywalked in front of the car and they could not stop in time?
Yes, I considered exactly those kinds of things.
Although some people have "been there, done that," many who have, regardless of how accidental or righteous the circumstances, don't take it lightly.
The tone of your original post seemed to take the topic lightly. Maybe you didn't mean it that way but, to me, some topics are a little too deep to use just for stirring the pot on a (originally) Mac user forum.

1. You're right. I shouldn't have said "anybody." I should have said "many."
2. Didn't say everybody should regret it or lose sleep over. Just that most would have pretty personal feelings about the matter.
3. I'll go out on a limb and say that most people who have killed someone were NOT face to face with true evil. In fact, many people who may have acted in self defense may have been just as well served by some method of diffusing the situation short of killing. They may at least have lingering doubts about that matter. Of course, it's easier and more dramatic to talk about things as black or white.

Plotted it once.. in detail.
When I found out my then-girlfriends then-3-year-old daughter was being molested by her daughters father.
Fortunately, the law got to him before I finished my planning.
The relationship didn't last (as it turned out, the then-girlfriend had more issues than a newsstand herself...)
they always do, those types.
but, I fully support the ditch in the cornfield for such behavior.

In the suspense novel that I am writing, I suppose that I am killing off an avatar of my ex-boyfriend. Seems like a better idea than doing it in real life.
