I downloaded and installed Windows 7 from Microsoft today. I'm impressed so far. They've managed to polish a turd. It is Vista, but without the suck. It is definitely faster. Vista just feels like towing a barge through molasses. This is snappy. I'm using an older Dell Latitude D610 laptop with only 1GB of RAM and it still feels useable. I can't install Anti-Virus software on it yet though so it might slow down quite a bit after that. They seem to have finally figured out when to warn people about various actions. It isn't nearly as annoying. In short, this actually feels like an improvement over XP. Is it a big improvement? No. More like Leopard to Snow Leopard, but with better graphics. I will say though that the window of opportunity for Apple to steal users from Microsoft based on the suckiness of Vista is closing. Firefox installs just fine. Opera works. Chrome works. OpenOffice works. It boots pretty darn quickly. It looks like the demo of Longhorn that Bill G showed off so many years ago.

I've been running various releases along the way and I'm *extremely* impressed with 7. Some of it's features like the window managing, previews, and dragging to the sides to expand windows is really impressive. The only thing I don't like is the networking, but honestly the only networking stack I do like is Linux's.

I understand that MS is offering a bare bones “light” version for free. I've been wondering if it would be usable as my Windows app on my Macs to use just for a few basics that might come in handy?
I don't have enough of a need to buy a full version, so I thought this might be a way to experiment with my Intel Macs' dual usage.
If this would work would I need a virus app if I used it to surf the Internet or check email?
This isn't a big deal for me. Just wondering.
Thanks for your thoughts,
GeneL

I keep reading about more benefits for large business users. There is a lot behind the scenes that most home users will never see. I think Microsoft will see a lot of sales if Office 2010 is a similar improvement.

So it's better than Leopard, but not as good as Snow Leopard?

I think the window of opportunity for a free version of Windows 7 has passed. I did get the free version and loaded it. I thought it worked just fine. I got the new version of Wolfenstein and it bogged down in Windows 7. I had to go back to Vista to get it to work. I have two hard drives in my windows desktop, one with Vista and the other with Windows 7. I understand the free version is good until next spring sometime. I have no anti-virus programs installed.

I just took a look at the pricing for Windows 7, and I found out that there are three versions.
The Windows 7 professional upgrade, which is the $199.99 version includes this capability:
"Run many existing Windows XP productivity applications in Windows XP Mode."
So, if a home user only buys the Windows 7 Home Premium version for $119.99, will they be able to run older programs or not? Funny how Apple did not charge extra for Rosetta.
