Last time I was shopping I could have sworn the office supply stores had the HP 15A cartridges for $50, and the refill shop had them for a little over $30 for the 15X. Now I go to buy again, albeit a few years later, and the previously $50 cart is $75, and the $30ish cart is $63.
Man, wish I didn't need it today, or I'd just find another solution.

I don't know, but this years flu shot cost $5 more than the last one I got.

I don't think you're imaging it; it seems a few cursory items like that are much higher.
I believe this is an example of
sticky pricing -- I noticed a number of items went up in cost when fuel costs doubled back when. When fuel finally came back down and stabilized, the cost of these items maybe went down fractionally, but nothing near what they were pre-fuel crunch.

You may also be seeing the effects of a smaller market for that particular cartridge as printers that use it go out of service. Persons still using those models "have" to get one of that type cartridge, or get a new printer. Also, a major component of toner is plastic resin, made from oil, so its price as a raw material went up with oil prices. So even the refills went up in price a bunch. As Zoidberg points out, when some prices go up, they tend to "stick" before going back down.

JoeH, I just checked all the model numbers the cartridge fits in, then searched in google products for them... none of the main stores have them new, mainly just used and refurbed. So I think you're right.
I like this printer (HP LJ 1200) and have had it for over eight years. Almost want to buy a new one to get stuff cheaper, but at the same time it's been a great printer.
