Aaaaargh! iTunes is driving me batty!

Hi,

In reference to this thread from yesterday:

http://forums.macresource.com/read.php?1...msg-826122

I still can't get it to work. I don't understand. I'm following the directions that Apple (and other good websites) provide for moving an iTunes library (in this case, I'm moving from an external to an internal), but iTunes is just not recognizing that the tracks are there.

I am at my wit's end with iTunes. I know there must have been a reason that Apple made all of this so complicated, but I wish that they could have just done it like they did for iPhoto libraries - drag and drop and then hold down option when launching to pick the new library!

What is the name of your external drive? Could you name a folder the same as external drive and point iTunes to that folder on your internal drive? I wish I could help more - I've had the same iTunes folder since 2003 on 5 different machines. Now it's on an external named iTunes and iTunes itself hasn't had any issue recognizing my music.

My feeling is that this chit is just plain broken.
You could have had your library and playlists mostly rebuilt from scratch in the time you've spent on this.

I never thought of that, but it would seem that it would still make the path slightly different vs. the path when the library was on the external.

Steps that I take to move an iTunes library to a new Mac:

1. Copy the original folder of audio files to its new location.*
2. Copy the ~/Music/iTunes folder to the Music folder for the appropriate user account on the new Mac.
3. Launch iTunes on the new Mac
4. In the iTunes pref's, select the Advanced tab and change the music folder to the one in the new location. Uncheck the "keep organized" option.
5. Select the "Add to Library..." command from the File menu and select the folder that has your audio files.
6. Wait until it's done.
7. Enjoy.

*Assumes that the folder is not in the default path in the ~/Music/iTunes folder. If this is not the case then skip to step 2.

I have a default setup on my laptop.

1) My location is ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music ('cause the question it asks is, where are your media files kept)

2) I always let iTunes make whatever folders it wants inside of that (keep organized.)

3) "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" is checked.

*********************

If you set that up, and even if you have no songs where they should be on the local drive, you should be able to replace the "iTunes Music" folder on the local with that of the external, thereby copying all songs to your local drive.

Then drag the local "iTunes Music" folder over to the LIBRARY source window area in iTunes. Might need to drop it close to the Music icon. You should see a green + sign and let go.

Dragging the "iTunes Music" folder into the iTunes window like that is a way to tell iTunes "this is what I have, make sure you recognize what songs and I have and where they are. Beotch." Just make sure you've got the "iTunes Music" folder where you want it first and that it's already got your songs in it.

Yep, as deckeda pointed out, make sure you're selecting the right folder.

I would disconnect the external drive and leave it disconnected while you try to figure this out. If you've copied over all the data, you shouldn't need it connected anymore.

One thing you should check is open up your iTunes Music Library.xml file in your iTunes folder. Use an app like Text Wrangler. On roughly line 10 you should see something like:

Music Folderfile://localhost/Users/pinkoos/Music/iTunes/iTunes%20Media/

If it shows your external drive, you've found your problem.

Just be glad you're not moving an iTunes library from Mac to Windows.
