why do movie properties display this way in Quicktime player?

It was recorded on a consumer video camera?

I think the parenthetical shows the dimensions if exported in square pixels without letterboxing or cropping.

Digital Video (DV) is recorded using non-square pixels in order to increase the horizontal resolution / density. 720 is the number of non-square pixels. If you were to convert those pixels to squares that would translate to 853.

Hopefully that makes sense. Sometimes this stuff hurts to think about.

yes. it hurts my brain. i sort of get it but not really.

My problem was i couldn't figure out why it would get squished when i resized and exported it through the flash video encoder. I had "keep aspect ratio" checked. But it still came out squished.

Then I calculated that 640 (my target size) was about 75% of the 853 number. Than used that percentage to calculate my height which ended up being 360. Pop those numbers into the Flash encoder and the video comes out right.

REALLY annoying.

I agree. 9 times out of 10 "keep aspect ratio" actually seems to mess it up.
