Son's original iPhone now has spider-webbed front glass. Phone works fine and there is no cracks that can be felt running finger over it.....anyone know of a 'glass' repair service (and how much?).
Thanks...

It isn't easy on the first gen models. It requires complete disassembly of the phone. You can pick up a working 4GB or 8GB original for under $150 now, I'd just do that and sell the old one for parts.

Yeah..that's what I was thinking. I can also upgrade to the 3G for only $99 with 'the whore of babylon'...er...ATT. They charge more per month for it though.

wasn't there a thread on this board maybe 6 months ago that gave a link to a guy that does glass replacements very quickly and very well somewhere in So. Cal? Also has a mail-in service that seemed pretty reasonable.

The majority of people that I know who own an iPhone have a cracked screen and just live with it. Kind of makes me not want to get one.

I owned my original iPhone for 2 years without incident. I upgraded to a 3GS (which is still fine, knock on wood!) but my daughter disliked the case on the original iPhone and promptly dropped the 'naked' iPhone on cement - cracking the screen AND digitized.
She now has a second gen iPod touch (purchased with HER money) and case, and it's been dropped a few times without incident. The key is the case was the first part of the touch to hit the ground, not the glass.
My take is that if the glass side lands hard, there will be a likely problem. But if you have a case that protects the glass from direct damage, these small electronic devices are pretty durable.
If anyone needs an original iPhone with cracked screen for parts, send me a PM.

I happen to have a 1st gen (or maybe 2nd? Not 3G, anyway) phone that I wanted to sell but didn't want to sell the accessories (dock, cables, etc.). PM me if you might be interested in getting just the phone for a good deal.

Broken iPhones fetch surprisingly high amounts on eBay. FWIW, refurb 3GS models were $49 last Friday. Probably will be again sometime.
