I am sure that there are better in-ear monitors (cost no object) yet for $100, I bought 3 pair (one as a spare, one for my wife). If I don't care for the sound or comfort, I could ebay these for double what I paid for them.

That solved my headphone need. Hopefully I will have these in time for my trip. If not, I am borrowing a pair of Sony MDR-V6s from my brother and will have these when I get back.

The list price of those earphones is astonishing.

You can get a pair of Stax electrostatics for less here.

The 'market value' is pretty high too, as evidenced by fleabay closing prices of +$200.

I wish I had gotten in on the Ultimate Ears TripleFi 10vi for $99 as the Lightning Deal earlier today...

But in the $100 range, there are no better headphones than these (I would hazard to say, that you would not get any competition until you get into the $300 range).

I would not pay >$300 or even $200 for these, but for $100, these are a slam dunk. With anything toward the high end of the range, it is diminishing returns*. To get "better" sounding headphones, you will pay more than $500 (I think that is how much the Shure headphones cost).

*I am putting an asterisk here as this is not ALWAYS true: my Swans speakers on my desk sound as good (to me) as professional near-field monitors used in a pro studio costing $4K each (a friend is a recording engineer and I have been in studio during a mixdown and the Tannoys he was using sound no different than my Swans). Best computers speakers I have owned without question.

**UPDATE**

They look to be sold out. Congrats to those who picked up a pair or more. :woot:

Rats. I dawdled. Don't use headphones much, mostly when I travel (and less since my iPod got lost in shipping). Ah, well, that's a c-note I don't have to worry about.
