"borrowing" wifi from a neighbor - I feel naughty

I just bought this second home condo, and haven't had time to get internet yet.

I know I need to go ahead and do it, but I'll only be here a few days a month, and MAN, somebody's Netgear router is FAST!

I wish I knew who they were, because I'd get whatever service they have.

Just do a traceroute and see what the first hop is. You should be able to figure out the service provider from that.

This summer, we experienced 2 cable internet outages lasting several hours each. The only way I could check email was to "borrow" the neighbor's wifi. I didn't spend that time surfing. I just used it long enough to check email.

I remember getting in a huge argument over this with someone a few years back. I say way to go. If that signal is coming to your computer then you own it. Damn the law.

That sentiment only works until you're the one being fingered for violating the law and the system has decided to make an example of you.

Sure, the odds are against it, but, as in the RIAA cases, do you really want to be the one on trial for something you don't feel was wrong, but that the law clearly states is a criminal offense and the understanding of this will be established to the jury of your supposed peers (most of whom are technically clueless) by government lawyers with every reason to see the enforcement of such laws upheld?
