"borrowing" wifi from a neighbor - I feel naughty

My WiFi is open but I myself can barely get on.

Alas and alack.

Alas, poor Yorick! I knew his WiFi well: a signal
of infinite strength, of most excellent fancy: he hath
borne me on his back a thousand times; and now, how
abhorred in my imagination it is! my gorge rims at
it. Here passed those data packets that I have sent I know
not how oft. Where be your gibes now? your
gambols? your songs? your flashes of pRon?,
that were wont to set the table on a roar? Not one
now, to mock your own MAC address? quite chap-fallen?
Now get you to my lady's laptop, and email her, let
her bitorrent the entire LOTR trilogy in HD, no less, to this
favour she must come; make her laugh at that.

:oldfogey:
Bravo! (or perhaps, Brava!) Glad to see your Liberal Arts education is not totally wasted. Or, perchance, tis mere Googling......

What law? Your neighbor is beaming radio waves into your home and you think it's against the law to use them? There ain't no law against that.
A voice of sanity - thank you!

And today, suddenly my Internet just stopped working, until i enabled encryption and a password. Now it's working fine again.

If a neighbor's fruit tree branch is hanging over to my yard, then it is not against the law for me to sample the fruits on my side of the fence. Should not this rule be applicable to a neighbor's open wifi connection as well?

if you have cable-based internet, make friends with a neighbor who has DSL/wireless/satellite/something other than cable broadband

and vice-versa.

nice to have a backup when your line goes down.

Law: http://www.ncsl.org/IssuesResearch/Telec...fault.aspx

You may not consider it unauthorized access but a court will and has. I don't agree either but it is what it is.
