why are Americans so afraid of the European system?

Add housing, transportation, utilities, clothes and fuel to the mix. There are no less than healthcare. Wait, can't leave a lifetime job out. Problem is you are not the first one to think of it. Like the fountain of youth people have been after this since the ancient Greece. If you find it, I'll be the first one to sign up.

Good question dakota. Mr Downtown answered it quite succinctly. Would you agree to a similar program for healthcare that we have for food?

Then why do we have so many starving children in the USA? Families are falling through the cracks especially the working poor. My sister recently lost her job and applied for help. She was denied because her income from the previous year was too high. They were living out of their savings account and because they owned their own home they disqualified. Thank heavens she found a job within a month (and her church runs its own food bank) or I don't know what she would have done.

Because we've had "Reaganomics" thrust upon us for 20 out of the last 30 years?

That and I suspect we are only getting part of the story. You won't be disqualified to get food aid just for previous years income and owning a house.

Silly me. I thought they are going to let go of Bush about a year into Obama's presidency. BTW, in a land of 99c cheeseburgers I am not sure how you can go hungry.

Allow me to put on my "conservative" shoes...

Ahem..."She clearly lacked the personal responsibility that a real American would have. She should have had an emergency fund to help through the hard times. I don't work hard and keep my emergency fund AND pay taxes so your lazy sister can coast by on federal entitlement programs! I have never bought a new car and I don't have any fancy flat panel plasma TVs because I have to pay taxes to support families that spend like drunken sailors AND keep an emergency fund because I feel that it is my PERSONAL responsibility to see me & my family through hard times and NOT the government!"

There. I think I got that right.
