Well I don't think he got off easy for this, but since you are still without your car I wouldn't say the outcome is just. If I were a judge I would have gone with a shorter sentence and made him reimburse you for a replacement car.

I think justice was served as its intended to be served, but you're without your car and the state placed someone behind bars for two years so its hardly a pleasant outcome.

Part of the court order is for him to reimburse me ($1500) for the cost of the car. But since inmates earn 10 cents an hour (or something like that) I was told don't expect much if anything.

Ditto what MikeBW said. It wasn't justice, but he certainly isn't going to forget about that Toyota anytime soon. Maybe if he were made to carry you on his back, repair the car, or replace the car that would be justice.

"You could sue him."
As my Dad would say, "You can't get blood out of a stone".
The dude already had a grand theft warrant in NH but the state refused to extradite him, basically told the state of AZ "You can have him". Once he's out he's heading out of state to who knows where (edit: so make sure you have a anti-theft device in your vehicle come 2012).

Can you legally file a lein or something against his name? Or is that already done by the court?
Perhaps something that will stick on him for a while. Not that it might matter, other than to make you feel a little better.
Family members of mine in AZ had their Prius stolen recently, too... cops found meth in the car when it was recovered.

I agree that there's really no justice unless you're reimbursed for your financial loss.
He should also be fined/billed for what it's going to cost the state to incarcerate him.

I sat through a trial two weeks ago (went from 9 AM to 7 PM). Guy sped through a red light, hit a cyclist, sent her flying 120 feet through the air (she shattered his windshield, was dead before she hit the ground)-- instead of stopping he whipped across the median, raced the wrong way down a one way street, turned and raced the wrong way down another one way street, headed back to the scene, swapped seats with a back seat passenger . . .
The driver got 64 hours of community service, and if he doesn't behave he could get his license suspended.
