air compressor part 2
#1
As you may recall I recently posted that I wanted to buy an air compressor mostly for filling up bike tires and flat balls. Today it came to a head when my foot pump sprung a leak and refused to work anymore. I ended up going in a very different direction, I got a little co2 cartridge adapter for filling up bike tires.

so we fill car tires with N2 but bike tires with CO2?

No, I don't pay extra for N2, I bought tires at Costco, cheaper than most places and they do tire rotations and balancing for free as long as you own those tires

Plus you can use the CO2 for your beer in a pinch.

Some of the things I have purchased have turned out to be awesome and some have turned out to be less than awesome. This item is in the second category. One co2 cartridge is enough to fill one adult tire to about 40psi. Buying in bulk that is about $1 to fill a single tire. Apparently this product is not used for the purpose I bought it for. Instead bikers tuck this in their under seat tool pouch to fill a flat tire on the road. It is more of an emergency item.

So I went back to the idea of buying an actual air compressor except I bought a little smaller. I ended up with a DEWALT D55140 Heavy-Duty 1-Gallon 135 PSI Max Trim Compressor. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000HZJ...ss_product . It is smaller than the Makita MAC700 Big Bore 2.0 HP Air Compressor http://www.amazon.com/Makita-MAC700-Big-..._o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I1GBFQUYW4JCGT&colid=5IZQ455KZ8GR that I originally wanted. I had three reasons for coming down and buying a smaller model. 1) It is rated at 69dbi which is pretty quiet for an air compressor, 2) the price was about $80 less, 3) it is light weight and presumably easier to store. And no maintenance.

So it was something of a middle of the road purchase but I think it will work well for me.

Why on earth would you buy a compressor to pump up a bike tire or ball. A decent bicycle floor pump will do a bike tire in about 30 seconds, a ball in about a minute, is reliable, and costs a lot less than a compressor. I also keep a mini hand pump in my soccer bag for inflating balls. I know quite a few bike riders who carry a CO2 cartridge to save the weight of a pump. However, I think that's silly. The weight savings is minimal, and if you make a mistake you lose all of your CO2 and are stuck by the side of the road.

I believe in overkill. :-)

I also bought the 25ft hose and the attachment set so I can fill car tires when needed.

I've used my compressor for (besides bike tires and balls) driveway crack cleaning before crack repair, blowing water out of the lawn watering pipes in the Fall, tractor tires, blowing lawn clipping and leaves off the riding mower deck, nailing, cleaning the deck, etc.
You'll find all manner of uses for it.

Spin bearings with it. I understand that this makes a neat sound like a turbo.

I've also heard that this is dangerous.
