How about not raising hamsters?

Oh and the other thing -- these b@stards are about the most resistant insects I've ever seen. They'll take several direct hits with a rubbing alcohol/dish soap mix I use as a regular bug spray (cheap and very safe), and survive. Likewise, they seem pretty resistant to regular insecticides too.

eep, how about not raising dogs or cats?

Make the cages airtight. That will keep the flies out.

it seems to be a new problem (I don't remember you posting about this before). You need to find out what changed and fix that.

are you growing these hamsters in your abode or you grow these for the lab (I think you work at some university).

And by the way, that big, huge mistake you made several years ago, how did you recover? was the loss really that big? did you get over it?

>>The problem is that the insect population here (in NOLA) is ridiculous-- mosquitos, fleas, roaches, flies, Africanized bees, fire ants, we have everything nasty here

you need a bat house!

How about those sticky strips? Flies land and are stuck.

What changed -- not really sure. We get all sorts of weird species down here that nobody has seen before... probably because it's a port town, so all sorts of stuff comes in on ships...

Yes, these are at my home, not in the lab...

I personally think we need to breed some sort of animal here that has a taste for roaches. The place is infested with them, and it has nothing to do with sanitation-- they're just everywhere here. The closest we have that I'm aware of, is a type of wasp that parasitizes the roach larvae...

And thanks to those of you who have offered useful suggestions and not snide remarks.

Relax, man. You are posting about hamster poo. Gotta expect a few jokes.
