Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords Shot at Arizona Event
#1
Just heard it on the radio a few minutes ago on my way home - very few details yet

Congresswoman Shot In Arizona

by NPR Staff
January 8, 2011

U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona was shot outside a grocery store in Tucson
while holding a public event, an eyewitness reported Saturday.

Giffords, who was re-elected to her third term in November, was hosting her first "Congress on Your Corner”
event at the Safeway in northwest Tucson when a gunman ran up and started shooting. At least five other people, including members of her staff, were hurt, according to Peter Michaels, news director of Arizona Public Media.

Giffords was transported to University Medical Center in Tucson. Her condition was not immediately known.

Michaels said Giffords was talking to a couple when the man ran up, firing indiscriminately, and then ran off. He was tackled by a bystander and presumably taken into custody.

Shot point blank in the head. God, I hope she and the others survive.
So sad.

Good that they caught the shooter right away.

"Giffords holds a Master’s Degree in Regional Planning from Cornell University and a B.A. from Scripps College where she was awarded a William Fulbright Scholarship to study for a year in Chihuahua, Mexico. She is married to Captain Mark Kelly, a Navy Pilot and NASA astronaut, and is the only U.S. Representative with an active duty military spouse."

Smart, hard-working lady who has accomplished a lot for her district over the years and is well-respected in Congress.
Prayers go out to her and to her family.

I'm saddened by this news - and horrified.

Who among us didn't know, or at least suspect, that this day was coming?

Really, that this is even possible in this great nation is humiliating.

We should hang our heads in shame for allowing - and in many cases encouraging - the toxic climate that in all probability is at the root of this tragic event.

I'd like to think we might learn from this, but when has America ever genuinely learned from its mistakes?

I await the reprimands from those who will read between the lines of what I've written here and find a reason to attack my words.

Perhaps this is because they recognize their own reflections staring back at them from between those same lines.

Sad, sad, sad.

Tragic. It can happen anywhere, at any time.

WTF does THAT mean? This isn't the first time someone has been shot and killed in this country. And no, I'm not reading between the lines, it's a line you wrote.
